Talks between the US and Iran are trying to get back on track after a delay that caused US Vice President JD Vance to cancel a trip to Switzerland.
The technical talks were scheduled to begin on Friday but were abruptly postponed after an escalation of deadly attacks between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The sides have now renewed their fragile ceasefire, which has at times jeopardized the negotiation process between the US and Iran.
Israel has faced growing criticism from its strongest ally, writes CNN.
Both JD Vance and US President Donald Trump have criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s offensive in Lebanon during the peace talks.
However, Trump recently stated that his relationship with Netanyahu remains strong.
“I’ve always had a good relationship with Bibi,” he told NBC on Friday. “Sometimes you just have to calm down and use your mind,” he added.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff is now traveling to Switzerland, according to a US official, and is expected to be joined by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Witkoff and Kushner had previously led negotiations with Iran to reach the initial memorandum of understanding.
It is not yet clear when the talks will resume, but they are expected to take place in the Swiss mountain resort of Bürgenstock.
On Friday, the Swiss Foreign Ministry announced that “relevant preparatory work at Bürgenstock is continuing.”
Negotiators face a 60-day deadline to reach a final agreement. /Telegraph/
