Donald Trump has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened immediately, linking this development to a possible agreement between the United States and Iran.
The statement was made during the G7 summit in France, where the US president appeared before the media alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Before the press conference, he wrote on the Truth Social platform that the most important part of the discussions related to the guarantee that Iran will not acquire nuclear weapons and the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Most people wanted to talk about the fact that Iran will not have nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately,” the 80-year-old declared.
Earlier, the US president had said that the strategic sea route would open within days.
A memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran is expected to be signed on Friday, suggesting that Trump may have been referring to reopening after the deal is reached.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, through which a large portion of global oil and gas exports pass. Any tension in this area has a direct impact on international energy markets.
Trump’s statements come at a time when the United States and Iran are trying to reach an agreement related to the nuclear issue and security in the Middle East region. /Telegraph
