Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reacted after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, stating that he personally had reservations about reaching an agreement with US President Donald Trump.
In a statement to the Iranian people, Khamenei said he “in principle” disagreed with signing the deal with Trump, whom he accused of using “all kinds of means out of desperation” to achieve this result.
However, he announced that he gave permission for the process after the Iranian president, in his capacity as chairman of the Supreme National Security Council, had given him guarantees that he would protect Iran’s interests and take responsibility for the agreement.
“I had a different opinion, but because of the president’s pledge and his statement that he would take responsibility, I gave permission,” Khamenei said, Skynews writes.
He added that if the American side attempts to exceed the limits of the agreement, the responsibility will not fall on Iran. According to him, the implementation of the conditions set out in the memorandum is now expected.
Khamenei also stressed that future negotiations between the two countries will not imply acceptance of American positions.
“The face-to-face negotiations that will take place in the future will not mean accepting the enemy’s point of view,” he said.
The statement comes after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US, which aims to open a new phase of dialogue between the two countries. /Telegraph/
