US intelligence agencies have warned the administration of US President Donald Trump that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could take actions that would jeopardize the new peace agreement between the US and Iran.
According to the Washington Post , Netanyahu is facing great political pressure within Israel to continue military operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, despite the agreement calling for a cessation of hostilities.
US intelligence reports estimate that Netanyahu’s political survival in the upcoming elections is linked to his promise not to withdraw Israeli troops from Lebanon. According to polls, about 70 percent of Israelis support continuing the war against Hezbollah.
Tensions rose on Friday after Israel carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon in response to a Hezbollah drone attack that killed four Israeli soldiers.
Due to the situation, the new round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland was postponed, while US Vice President JD Vance canceled his planned trip.
JD Vance indirectly criticized the Israeli government, stating that Trump is Israel’s strongest ally and that it would be unwise to challenge his support.
Even Trump has admitted to having disagreements with Netanyahu over operations in Lebanon, warning him against excessive military reactions.
Currently, the Israeli army controls more than 300 square kilometers of territory in Lebanon, while according to Lebanese authorities, over 3,000 people have been killed since mid-March.
Analysts warn that the continuation of the conflict could cause serious clashes between Washington and Tel Aviv. According to them, the US has strong tools to pressure Israel, including limiting military aid and intelligence cooperation.
However, it remains unclear whether the Trump administration will use these instruments in the event that Israel continues operations that could jeopardize the historic agreement with Iran. /Telegraph
