US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States bears the main financial burden of NATO, spending more than any other member country on the alliance’s defense.
According to him, the US has contributed about $999 billion, while other member countries spend significantly less.
The American leader claimed that the United Kingdom has spent $90.5 billion, France $66.5 billion, Italy $48.8 billion and Poland $44.3 billion.
Trump pointed out that countries like Germany and others also have even lower levels of contributions, calling this situation “meaningless” in the period 2014–2025.
His statements bring back one of the most recurring themes in transatlantic politics: the fair sharing of defense costs within NATO.
This issue has often been a source of tension between Washington and several European capitals, which have faced constant pressure to increase defense budgets.
Trump has been one of the most critical voices towards NATO allies, demanding that member countries fulfill more of their financial obligations so that the burden of collective security does not remain primarily on the United States. /Telegraph
