Oman has presented Iran with a proposal supported by Gulf countries for the creation of a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz, urging Tehran to relinquish sole control over this strategic sea route.
According to the plan, the management of the strait would be done in cooperation with the countries of the region, according to a model similar to that of the Strait of Malacca.
Passing ships would be able to pay voluntary fees, which would be used to fund maritime safety, environmental protection and emergency operations, Reuters writes.
The proposal aims to resolve one of the most sensitive issues in talks to reduce tensions in the region.
Iran has made it clear that it is not willing to return to the previous situation, where maritime traffic passed without restrictions, while Gulf countries oppose Tehran having exclusive control or imposing mandatory tariffs on ship passage.
The issue has also been recently discussed in meetings between the foreign ministers of Iran, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran are continuing, but warned that if diplomacy fails, military action could be resumed. /Telegraph
