US President Donald Trump has suspended attacks on Iran to “make room” for negotiations, the US ambassador to the United Nations said on Sunday.
Following this decision, Iran announced that it would also not carry out attacks as long as the United States did not attack.
“I’m leaving room for negotiations,” US Ambassador Mike Waltz told Fox News, without providing further details about the nature of the talks.
An Iranian source said on Sunday that Tehran would also stop the attacks as long as Washington did so.
“Iran’s approach remains ‘attack for attack’: if the attacks stop, Iran will also suspend its operations. This message has already been conveyed to the United States,” the source told Reuters.
However, he added that “there is more skepticism than optimism about a cessation of attacks” and that “the prevailing view is that this is a tactical pause and not a real cessation of the conflict.”
There has been a relative lull in tensions between Iran and the US over the weekend. The Pentagon has suspended bombing after 13 nights of increasingly intense attacks, while no Iranian attacks on neighboring countries have been reported in the last two days. /Telegraph/
